From Oct. 18-20, 1824, General Lafayette was honored in Yorktown with celebrations marking the October 19, 1781 American and French Victory.
On 15 August, Washington instructed Lafayette to keep His Lordship in the trap he had wandered into. "You will immediately take such position as will best enable you to prevent their sudden retreat thro' North Carolina, which I presume they will attempt the instant they perceive so formidable an Armament... You will be particularly careful to conceal the expected arrival" of the French armada whose presence would complete the blockade of the bay.
On 5 August, de Grasse had set sail with 28 ships of the line (SOLs) from Cape Francois and headed north. When the allied armies set out from White Plains, New York, for Yorktown on 18 August, the components of the siege ring were moving into place. In the afternoon of 29 August, the French fleet anchored off Cape Henry. The next day, Sourbader de Gimat, a French officer in American service, boarded the French flagship Ville de Paris to inform de Grasse that Washington and Rochambeau were on their way. But, by the evening of 30 September, the Continental Army had only reached Princeton, New Jersey, 350 miles to the north, with French forces even farther behind. With the 3,300 infantry de Grasse had brought from the West Indies added to his forces, Lafayette was now strong enough to prevent Cornwallis' escape on land.
Cornwallis' only hope of escape was by sea. On 5 September, de Grasse foiled this last hope in the Battle of the Capes. The siege on water held firm - no longer could his army either be rescued from the sea or escape on land. The siege ring tightened even more when Admiral Barras, with 8 SOLs, carrying the siege artillery, sailed into the wide-open Chesapeake Bay on 10 September. Faced with the vast numerical superiority of his 18 SOLs vs 36 French SOLs, British Admiral Thomas Graves returned to New York City. De Grasse' bold move to take all but one of his SOLs to the Chesapeake, the victory in the Battle of the Capes, and the timely arrival of Barras had created the temporary naval superiority that Washington had dreamed of ever since the fall of New York City in 1776.
Having left Boston Harbor on 10 September 1781, with 6,000 pounds of powder for the siege artillery, L'Hermione, the French frigate that had carried Lafayette and the news of Rochambeau's impending arrival into Boston on 2 May 1780, became the last vessel to join the blockade of the Chesapeake on 28 September. On that same day, allied land forces marched the final miles from Williamsburg to Yorktown. Entrapped by more than 18,500 Allied Forces on land and almost 25,000 naval personnel on de Grasse’s fleet, the British Army at Yorktown surrendered on October 19, 1781. Cornwallis had been captured not only because of Washington's and Rochambeau's generalship, but also as the result of the "most perfectly executed naval campaign of the age of sail.” ”

Admiral de Grasse, the French Navy and American Independence
The Global Context
"His Majesty, Sir, has entrusted me with the command of the naval forces which he has destined to protect his possessions in America and those of his allies in North America. The forces which I command, Sir, are sufficient to fulfill the offensive designs which it is in the interest of the Allied Powers to execute in order to bring about an honorable peace."
Admiral François Joseph Paul, Comte de Grasse' letter written from on board his flagship the 104-gun ship Ville-de-Paris, on March 29, 1781, reached General Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, Comte de Rochambeau, in Providence, Rhode Island, on June 10, six weeks after de Grasse had reached Martinique on April 28. In the same letter he informed Washington that he could be in American waters by July 15 though would only stay until October 15. These lines bolstered General George Washington's hope that de Grasse offensive designs indicated an attack on New York City, the center of British political and military power in the United States. That was the decision Washington and Rochambeau had taken in the Conference at Wethersfield, Connecticut, on May 22, 1781.
De Grasse sails to Virginia
In a letter of May 28, Rochambeau however hinted strongly that he would prefer the admiral to sail for Virginia rather than New York City. Knowing that his 74-gun ships could not cross the sand banks at the mouth of the Hudson River, de Grasse on July 28 decided to head for the Chesapeake. His letter reached allied headquarters in Westchester County, New York, on August 14. De Grasse had forced Washington's hand. Allied land forces would have to go wherever de Grasse took his fleet. On August 18, Washington and Rochambeau set out for Virginia.
De Grasse' fleet of 28 Ships of the Line and four frigates and two cutters set sail from Cap Français, today's Cap-Haïtien, in Haiti, on August 5. Their regular crews ranged from around 600 to almost 900 for a Ship of the Line. In addition, they carried 2,814 Line Infantry soldiers from 17 different regiments doing duty as marines. Rochambeau had requested additional troops and de Grasse had boarded the Câtinois, Agenois, and Touraine infantry regiments, a detachment from the Metz Artillery Regiment, and the Volontaires de St. Simon about 100 hussars strong, altogether 3,289 officers, non-commissioned officers and rank and file under the command of Claude Anne de Rouvroy, Marquis de Saint-Simon Montbléru. In the evening of August 29, look-outs discovered Cape Henry.

This is how Admiral de Grasse, 6'4" tall, greeted General George Washington, at 6'2" also much taller than most of his contemporaries, as he boarded the Ville-de-Paris.
Though the greeting may be apocryphal, de Grasse heartily welcomed Washington in the morning of September 18, 1781. Washington, accompanied by the Comte de Rochambeau, the Chevalier de Chastellux and Generals Henry Knox and Presle Duportail had come to plead with de Grasse to stay beyond the deadline of October 15. Washington received the answer he had hoped for. De Grasse would stay until the end of October.
Battle of the Capes
Just as St. Simon's regiments were landing near Jamestown on September 5, the look-out on the frigate l'Aigrette spied Vice Admiral Thomas Graves' armada of 19 Ships of the Line and six frigates approaching the Chesapeake Bay. There was nothing de Grasse could do while wind and tide were against him. When he cut cables around noon, his crews were short some 90 officers and around 1,500 sailors who had not yet returned to their ships.
As the French fleet struggled out of their anchorage, Graves wasted valuable time lining up his vessels. Thanks to Graves' maneuvering, de Grasse now had 24 ships and 1,794 cannons in his battle line versus 19 British ships with 1,410 guns when the battle commenced at 3:46 p.m. When Graves ordered fire to cease at 6:30 p.m., his 74-gun-ships Shrewsbury and Ajax were almost un-sailable, the Terrible had to be burned at sea. His fleet had suffered 336 casualties. The French side mourned around 230 casualties but the 74-gun-ships Diadème and Pluton and the 64-gun-ships Réfléchi and Caton needed extensive repairs.
For the next few days, de Grasse drifted to the southward pulling Graves with him. This opened the Chesapeake for Admiral jacques-Melchior Saint-Laurent, Comte de Barras' fleet from Newport with the siege artillery to enter. When de Grasse returned to Lynnhaven Bay on September 11, he saw Barras ships riding at anchor. The Battle of the Capes had achieved its goal; with 36 Ships of the Line under his command, de Grasse had established an unassailable naval superiority around Yorktown. Lord Cornwallis escape route was cut off.
Departure
On October 19, British forces laid down their arms. De Grasse' chief administrative officer Lieutenant de Vaisseau Guillaume Jacques Constant de Liberge de Granchain represented the French Navy in the surrender negotiations. De Grasse never set foot on American soil. On November 4, his fleet sailed for the West Indies and anchored in Port Royal, today's Fort-de-France on Martinique, on November 25.

The Siege
The victory of September 5 established the siege ring on water. The landing of St. Simon's forces reenforced the lines around Yorktown. On September 29, a day after the siege of Yorktown had begun, Rochambeau asked de Grasse for troops to tighten the siege lines across the river. In the afternoon of August 30, 21 officers and 800 men from the regiments doing duty as marines departed for Gloucester where they joined American militia under General George Weedon and the Duc de Lauzun's Legion. Together they defeated Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton on October 3 in the Battle of the Hook, the largest cavalry engagement of the War of Independence. The presence of the French Navy was felt on land and on water, it impacted every aspect of the siege.
The contributions of the French Navy made the victory at Yorktown possible.
1) It brought 3,000 troops under the Marquis de St. Simen to strengthen the siege lines in Yorktown
2) The victory on September 5 closed the siege ring on water and ended all hope of escape for Lord Cornwallis
3) It provided 800 men from its ship garrisons to Gloucester to strengthen the siege lines around Gloucester Point
4) It brought the majority of Rochambeau’s forces from Annapolis to Yorktown, allowing for an early start of the siege
5) It brought 1.2 million livres from Havana, allowing Washington to pay his Army before embarking at Elkton

N.S. Savannah
N.S. Savannah, a joint project of the U.S. Maritime Administration and the Atomic Energy Commission, was the first nuclear-powered merchant ship. She was built to carry up to 60 passengers and 9,250 tons of cargo. In 1962, after reactor tests at Yorktown and sea trials, Savannah sailed from Yorktown to Savannah, Georgia, her home port.
From then until 1970, nearly 1.5 million people visited Savannah to explore her technological marvels. N.S. Savannah operated reliably and safely, established precedents for future commercial nuclear-powered merchant ships, and demonstrated the peaceful use of atomic power.
At the end of her service, Savannah was displayed at the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum in South Carolina and was later stored in the Maritime Administration’s Virginia reserve fleet. In 2008, Savannah was moved to Baltimore in preparation for final decommissioning.

Nick's Seafood Pavilion
After a vacation stopover in Yorktown, Nick and Mary Mathews decided to return in 1944 to open a restaurant. The original Nick’s had 35 seats. Later, Nick’s Seafood Pavilion, famous for it’s fine seafood menu and ornate decor, expanded to seat 440.
Nick’s welcomed many dignitaries and entertainers. Among others, John Wayne, Elizabeth Taylor, Fred McMurray, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Randy Travis, the 1980 Winter Olympic torch relay runners, and two Russian military defectors dined at Nick’s. The couple openly expressed their love of America and Yorktown and generously supported many projects and causes, including donating land for the development of the Yorktown Victory Center. That generosity also extended to military members in uniform, who always ate free-of-charge at Nick’s.
In 1983, “Miss Mary” was chosen to sponsor the USS Yorktown (CG48), becoming the first immigrant to christen a U.S. Navy ship. “Mr. Nick” passed away, unexpectedly, on the way to the christening ceremony. Mary died in September 1998. The Mathews and the restaurant are fondly remembered, however, the restaurant was severely damaged in 2003 during Hurricane Isabel and was subsequently demolished.

George P. Coleman Bridge
Completed in 1952, the George P. Coleman Bridge is 3,750 feet long. The structure replaced a ferry system that operated here for more than 200 years.
The bridge was widened and reconstructed in 1995. Prefabricated in six sections, the entire superstructure was barged from Norfolk to this location and set in place in ten days. The Coleman Bridge is one of two double-swing-span bridges in the world; it is the only one in the United States. Two 500-foot spans swing clockwise, allowing large vessels to follow the York River’s natural channel.
George Preston Coleman, a native Virginian and former mayor of Williamsburg, was Virginia’s highway commissioner from 1913 to 1922.

Chesapeake Bay Watermen
Rugged men and women have made their living on the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers for centuries. Known as watermen, they hand down skills learned by observing water, climate, and wildlife. Consequently, younger generations learn time-honored maritime traditions from their elders. The work is often dangerous, especially during bad weather, but affection and respect for the marine environment motivates those who work on boats. Watermen harvest fish, oysters, crabs, clams, and scallops. They operate ferries, tugboats, police boats, and research vessels. Thomas Jefferson, who promoted the idea of “a school of instruction for our navy,” recognized the valuable skills developed by working watermen and referred to their industries as providing good instruction. More than 200 years later, watermen are still seen here as they go about their work on the York River.

York River Ferry
Records indicate that regular ferry service began here as early as 1647 to cross the river between Yorktown and Gloucester Point. Ferries were licensed by the Virginia House of Burgesses and tolls, equipment, and services were regulated by colonial and later state government.
Two women, Janet Mitchell and Mary Gibbons of Yorktown, managed the ferry business in 1774. They advised “Gentlemen who cross to pay their Ferriages at the Swan Tavern” and they also assured customers reading the April 1 issue of the Virginia Gazette that “the Ferry shall be kept inferiour to none in the Colony.”
The first ferries were powered by men using oars. Later, a cable was used to pull boats across. The invention of the internal combustion engine meant boats could motor across the channel. When the George P. Coleman Bridge opened in 1952, the Virginia Department of Transportation discontinued ferry service in this location.

Yorktown's Tea Party
While the Boston Tea Party of December 1773 is famous, a lesser known protest against the Tea Act also occurred in Virginia. On November 7, 1774 some concerned citizens of York County openly boarded a ship in the harbor and dumped two small chests of tea into the York River, tea that had been imported despite a boycott.
The earlier Boston event was only the most extreme of many protests, not against taxation itself, but against British attempts to tax Americans without allowing them representation in Parliament. This destruction of valuable private property outraged most Britons and was a turning point in the conflicts leading up to the Revolution.
The residents and patriot leaders of this area, like others throughout the colonies, demonstrated their support of the Revolutionary cause and their refusal to import tea with this dignified, highly symbolic tea party of their own. The local merchant, who had ordered the small shipment of tea, quickly apologized in the newspaper and asked the local citizens for forgiveness.

York Spit Lighthouse
• Built in 1870 at York Spit, Virginia, at the entrance to the York River.
• The lighthouse was a white hexagonal cottage with two bedrooms, a kitchen & a sitting room. The cottage was supported by 14 wood piles encased in cast iron. It was originally equipped with a fifth-order Fresnel lens but was changed to a larger, fourth-order Fresnel lens with a fixed red light.
• The lighthouse had two larger "wing-like" decks extending from two sides of the house. These were used for additional storage, as well as greater support for fog machinery.
• Keeper William J. Diggs reports major damage to the lighthouse during a bad storm in August 1933. He states, "Floors began to burst up. Sailboat broke away. Sea breaking over deck. Oil tanks broke away" When his boat was found onshore, many thought Keeper Diggs had drowned, but he was taken off the lighthouse earlier by a passing fisherman. A temporary light was established until repairs could be made.

Tue Marshes Lighthouse
• Built in 1875 on the Goodwin Islands at the entrance of the York River.
• The lighthouse was a white square cottage supported by 5 piles, with a brown roof. The first level consisted of a storeroom, sitting room & kitchen. A privy was cantilevered off the main deck. It was equipped with a sixth-order Fresnel lens exhibiting a fixed white light with a red sector.
• The most unique feature of this lighthouse was the gingerbread wood details on the eaves of the roof.
• The original spelling was "Too's Marshes", but it was changed to the current spelling sometime in the late 1890s.
• In the 1850s, the Lighthouse Board began replacing lightships and lighthouses with screwpile structures. The depth of the pilings varied depending on the firmness of the bedrock but usually were not driven more than six feet deep. The tapered iron pilings were between 6-10 inches in diameter and the corkscrew flanges at the ends were usually 2-3 feet from tip to tip. These blades twisted the pilings into the river bottom.

Yorktown's Windmill
For over 100 years, one of Yorktown’s most prominent landmarks was a tall, wooden “smock” windmill that stood at the edge of the steep bluff near here. A rotating cap with sails sat atop the tower and could be turned with a long tail pole to face the wind. The original mill was built by William Buckner about 1711 and ground grain for nearby residents. The windmill shown in several later 18th-century views of the town may have replaced Buckner’s first structure.
It is likely that the windmill was damaged during the 1781 siege of Yorktown. In 1801 it was referred to as the “Old Tower Windmill” suggesting it may not have been in operation. By 1840, the octagonal tower, missing its sails, was obviously in ruins as shown in the sketch above.
The use of wind to power mills for grinding grain dates to ancient times. A bluff-top site like this one was perfect for employing wind power to rotate the heavy grinding millstone, easing the task of producing flour and meal from wheat and corn. In Virginia, tidal and millpond water impoundments also provided power for gristmills.

John Smith Explores the Chesapeake
Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail
Captain John Smith explored the Chesapeake Bay in the early 1600s seeking precious metals and a passage to Asia. He traveled the James, Chickahominy, and York rivers in 1607, and led two major expeditions from Jamestown in 1608. Smith and his crew sailed and rowed a primitive 30-foot boat nearly 3,000 miles, reaching as far north as the Susquehanna River. Although Smith did not discover gold or a river passage to the Pacific, his precise map and detailed observations of American Indian societies and the abundant natural resources guided future explorers and settlers.
An Abundance of Life
Smith discovered a treasure trove of natural wonders in the Chesapeake region: thick forests of giant pines, oaks and hickories; vast marshlands; huge turtles, 800-pound sturgeon, and great schools of shad and striped bass. Massive flocks of ducks, geese, and swans darkened the sky; and enormous oyster reefs rose above the water’s surface.
Native Inhabitants
At the time of Smith’s exploration, an estimated 50,000 American Indians dwelled in the Chesapeake region—as their ancestors had for thousands of years. Their sophisticated societies included arts and architecture, systems of government, extensive trade and communication networks, and shared spiritual beliefs. The native peoples hunted, fished, grew crops, and gathered food and raw materials from the land and waterways.

Pages Rock Lighthouse
• Built in 1894, located approximately 5 miles north of Yorktown, off Blundering Point in the York River.
• The lighthouse was a white hexagonal cottage supported by 7 wooden piles encased in cast iron, which could be driven deeper than regular screw piles. A privy was cantilevered off the main deck. It was equipped with a fourth-order Fresnel lens exhibiting a fixed white light with a red sector.
• The lighthouse had a total of three, 600-gallon water tanks , two iron, and one wood. These tanks were fed from rainwater running from the roof clean.
• To construct the cottage, workers built a platform on top of 80 piles. When construction was complete and the working platform was removed, several piles were left standing above the waterline to act as ice breakers.
• Keeper Claudius Foster Sutton was Keeper from 1902-1931, a total of 29 years. His salary ranged from $560 to $1,740 per year.

Bells Rock Lighthouse
• In the late 1800s, West Point, Virginia, became a major terminal for the York River & Richmond Railroad. The lighthouse was built in 1881 in the York River near the fork of the Pamunkey & Mattaponi Rivers to assist ships sailing to West Point.
• The lighthouse was a white hexagonal cottage supported by 7 piles in ten feet of water, with a brown roof. The first level consisted of a sitting room, kitchen, & 2 bedrooms. The second level consisted of another bedroom, & storage. A privy was cantilevered off the main deck. It was equipped with a fourth-order Fresnel lens exhibiting a fixed white light & red sector.
• Over the 47 years, there were only four lighthouse keepers stationed at the lighthouse. The average pay for keepers was $650 per year.
• Fresnel lenses are made up of hundreds of glass prisms that resemble a big glass beehive and are divided into 7 classes, or "orders". First-order lights, used in larger bodies of water, were approximately 8.5-feet tall & weighed 12,800 pounds. Fourth, fifth & sixth-order lens was mainly used in smaller rivers, ranging from 17 to 28 inches tall, weighing 220 to 661 pounds.

Naval Weapons Station
Supply, amphibious, and combat ships pass Yorktown on their way to and from the Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. The military installation’s pier is located three miles upstream.
When the 20-square-mile site was acquired by the Navy on August 7, 1918, it was the largest naval installation in the world. Commissioned as the U.S. Navy Mine Depot, operations supported the World War I North Sea Mine Barrage. During World War II, the Depot continued to produce a wide range of ordnance materials such as underwater mines, depth charges, and torpedoes. Activities were reduced after World War II, but were soon increased again to meet the needs of the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam.
In 1958, the Depot was renamed Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. Today, the installation and its tenant commands provide technical, logistical, and supply-related services to the Atlantic Fleet.

The Collier Betsy

The Betsy was a collier, a unique style cargo ship with a rounded bow and a shallow draft
Yorktown was the primary port for Virginia through the 1760's. The Chesapeake Bay and its rivers were vital to the colonial cause for moving supplies and troops to the Continental Army. A part of the British army, led by General Benedict Arnold, invaded Virginia in December 1780. General Cornwallis arrived with his forces from the Carolinas in June 1781 and after a successful campaign throughout the colony, brought his forces to Yorktown in August 1781 to wait for the British navy to pick up some of his forces and take them to New York.
The two masted brig Betsy was built in the port of Whitehaven in 1772 for use in the coal trade. In 1780 the British navy pressed the Betsy as a transport in a convoy bound for North America, where it joined Cornwallis's fleet at Yorktown. When the French fleet occupied the Bay after the Battle of the Capes on September 5-9, the British began sinking ships in a line along the shore to impede the French from attacking. The Betsy, one of these ships, was scuttled on September 18, 1781 about ½ mile east of the museum.
A team of underwater archeologists from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources led by John D. Broadwater, excavated the Betsy in the late 1970's and early 1980's. The ship's hull still lies in place, filled with sand to protect it from further deterioration. The original model was built by Jim Rindfleisch. It took three years to build and was made completely out of recycled metal materials.
