May 28, 1864 - Overland Campaign: The Battle of Haw's Shop
May 28, 1864 The Battle of Haw's Shop; AKA Enon's Church; AKA Salem's Church Hanover County, VA Grant: cavalry under Brig. Gen. David McMurtrie Gregg (reinforced by two brigades of Brig. Gen. Alfred T.A. Torbert's division, and the brigade under Brig. Gen. George A. Custer) vs. Lee: a cavalry force under Maj. Gen. Wade Hampton * As Grant swings around Lee's right flank, again... * Inconclusive, but one of the bloodiest cavalry engagements of the whole war. Sever-hour battle, fought predominantly by dismounted cavalry. * casualties include Private John Huff, the cavalryman from the 5th Michigan who had fatally shot Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart at Yellow Tavern * It sure seems to this amateur historian, that Salem's Church and Enon's Church are being conflated here, though they are separate engagements at two different places and two different times. And also, that there was a cavalry battle in this some location in 1862. https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=14262 Enon Ch...
