June 6, 1862 Battle of Harrisonburg (or the Battle of Good's Farm; or Chestnut Ridge) Harrisonburg, VA USA- Frémont: 1st New Jersey Cavalry Regiment > Colonel Percy Wyndham; Brigadier General George D. Bayard: the 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry and the 13th Pennsylvania Reserves vs. CSA- Jackson: Confederate scouts > infantry of the 58th Virginia; 7th Virginia Cavalry under Colonel Turner Ashby; reinforcements from the 1st Maryland Infantry under Col. Bradley Johnson * A small rear-guard engagement, with nary its own website, part of Jackson's 1862 Valley Campaign. This is/occurs simultaneously with the cavalry raid in which Ashby dies. * Soldiers of the 13th Pennsylvania Reserves claimed credit for the shot that killed Ashby, though some accounts blame friendly fire. * Despite the quick death of an infamous traitor, it wasn't really a great day: the PA Reserves retreated after a counterattack, and during a "hasty and disorganized retreat" the 1st NJ left behind...

May 25, 1862 First Winchester Winchester, VA (Frederick County) US- Banks: Colonel George Gordon’s 3rd Brigade vs CSA- Jackson: General Dick Taylor’s Louisiana Brigade, reinforced by the 10th and 23rd Virginia * Following Banks' victory over Jackson at Kernstown... * Confederate victory, though they lost 16,000 to the Union's 6,500, part of Jackson's Shenandoah Valley Campaign, following his victories at McDowell and Front Royal  * Banks retreats to Williamsport, MD Opps. John Reese Kenly (wounded and captured here)- 29th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment guarded the area between the two forks of the river; 100 men from two companies of the 5th New York Cavalry Regiment;  1st Maryland Infantry vs. Maj. Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson: Ewell,    The Stonewall Brigade, Turner Ashby's cavalry; 1st Maryland Infantry (CSA) under Col. Bradley T. Johnson & Major Roberdeau Wheat's Louisiana Tigers; the 2nd Virginia Cavalry Regiment and the 6th Virginia Cavalry Regiment under Colonel Thomas Flournoy, and part of the 8th Louisiana Infantry Regiment  * Banks' men were entrenched and guarding the Shenandoah Valley, facing south from Strasburg, so Jackson headed east to circle around and hit them from behind, at their  Front Royal  outpost, where only 1,00 men  anchored their long line across the Vall...
